Crowns & Veneers

Crowns and veneers are a restorative dental treatment used to repair, protect or improve the appearance of teeth.

These may be considered when there are fractured or weakened teeth, large or failing restorations, severe wear or erosion, discolouration that does not respond to teeth whitening, irregular tooth shape or size and/or minor alignment concerns.

Recommendations are based on a clinical evaluation of tooth structure, function and long-term stability.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth. It is designed to restore strength, shape and function. Crowns are typically made of composite, porcelain, Zirconia or a combination of precious metals.

Crowns are commonly used when a tooth cannot be predictably restored with a filling or when structural support is needed following procedures such as root canal therapy. They are fabricated to match the surrounding teeth and align with your bite.

What Are Veneers?

  • Veneers are thin, custom-made composite, porcelain or Zirconia overlays that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They are primarily used to improve the appearance of teeth while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.

Veneers may be considered for concerns such as discolouration, minor misalignment or irregular tooth shape. They are often part of a broader cosmetic dentistry approach and are designed to blend with natural teeth.

Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option for you.

Plaque and Tartar Removal

Professional instruments are used to remove plaque and hardened tartar from areas that are difficult to reach with home care alone, including along the gumline and between teeth.

How Crowns and Veneers Are Prepared

Treatment begins with a comprehensive dental exam to assess the condition of the teeth and surrounding structures.

Digital scans or impressions are taken of prepped teeth and used to create custom, natural restorations that fit precisely and align with your bite. These digital impressions can be used for same-day crowns made here in the clinic using the CEREC milling unit. In some cases, temporary restorations may be placed while the final crown or veneer is being fabricated at one of our trusted dental laboratories.

This approach supports both functional performance and long-term durability.

Placement and Final Adjustments

Once the final crown or veneer is ready, it is placed and securely bonded.

Your dentist will check the fit, function and overall appearance.

Adjustments may be made to ensure the restoration feels natural and functions properly.

Maintaining Whitening Results

Teeth whitening results can vary depending on lifestyle habits and oral hygiene.

Maintaining results may involve:

  • Regular dental cleanings
  • Limiting foods and beverages that stain teeth
  • Avoiding tobacco products
  • Following daily oral hygiene practices
  • Periodic touch-up whitening treatments may be recommended to maintain the desired shade.
What Teeth Whitening Cannot Change

Teeth whitening is designed to lighten the colour of natural tooth enamel. However, not all types of discolouration or dental concerns can be corrected through whitening treatments.

Whitening treatments do not change the colour of dental restorations such as dental crowns, veneers, dental bridges, or dental implants. These materials do not respond to whitening agents and will remain the same shade after treatment.

In addition, whitening may have a limited effect on certain types of internal discolouration caused by developmental conditions, trauma, or medication exposure during tooth formation. If discolouration is related to these factors, other cosmetic treatments such as veneers, dental crowns, or other cosmetic dentistry procedures may be discussed to improve the appearance of the affected teeth.

A dental examination helps determine whether whitening alone is appropriate or whether another treatment option may provide more predictable results.

Teeth Whitening vs Veneers

Teeth whitening and veneers are used to improve the appearance of teeth, but they address different types of concerns.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a non-invasive treatment that lightens the natural colour of tooth enamel. It is typically recommended when discolouration is related to surface staining or general darkening of the teeth.

Veneers

Veneers are thin restorations that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They may be considered when cosmetic concerns involve more than colour, such as uneven tooth shape, minor alignment concerns, or discolouration that does not respond to whitening treatments. In some cases, whitening may be used before placing veneers so that surrounding natural teeth can be matched to the desired shade.

A consultation allows your dentist to determine whether teeth whitening, veneers, or another cosmetic dentistry treatment may be the most appropriate option based on your goals and oral condition.

How Long Teeth Whitening Results Last

The longevity of teeth whitening results varies depending on individual habits, oral hygiene, and the type of whitening treatment used.

Professional whitening treatments can provide noticeable improvements in tooth shade, but teeth are naturally exposed to substances that may cause staining over time. Staining foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, and red wine, as well as tobacco use, can gradually affect tooth whiteness.

Maintaining whitening results often involves:

  • Consistent daily oral hygiene
  • Regular Check-ups and Cleanings
  • Limiting exposure to common staining substances
  • Periodic touch-up whitening treatments when recommended

In some cases, patients who wish to maintain a consistent tooth shade in the long term may explore cosmetic options such as veneers or other cosmetic dentistry treatments.

A dental examination can help determine the most appropriate approach for maintaining whitening results based on your oral health and goals.

Dental Assessment and Imaging

The dentist examines the teeth, gums, and jaw. They check spacing, alignment, and tooth position. 3D Imaging (CBCT) provides a detailed view of roots and nerves. This helps guide safe extraction planning.

Treatment and Aftercare

After removal, patients receive written aftercare instructions. These instructions help reduce infection risk and support healing. Follow-up visits may be recommended when needed.

Caring for Crowns and Veneers

Consistent Visits

Check-ups and Cleanings allow your dentist to monitor the condition of crowns and veneers and identify any changes early. Proper care helps maintain the integrity and longevity of crowns and veneers.

Avoiding Excessive Force

Clenching and grinding can place excessive stress on restorations. In some cases, a night guard may be recommended as part of preventive care.
