The Benefits of Dental Implants

Missing teeth are often the cause of embarrassment and issues with bite, eating, and talking. Thanks to modern dentistry, though, people who are missing teeth have an incredible amount of options for filling in the gaps in their smile and giving patients back their confidence and health. Every patient is different, so the right option for replacing missing teeth can be different per person. A great option that is available to many is a dental implant.

Who can get a dental implant?

Almost any adult can get a dental implant. As long as you are healthy enough to undergo oral surgery, have good gums, and your jaw bone has not degraded due to the loss of a tooth, you should be able to get a dental implant. You can get more than one dental implant at a time, including a bridge, so even if you are missing multiple teeth, implants are still an option for you.

Can implants fail?

The rejection rate of an implant is incredibly low, which is a huge plus side to dental implants. Most implants that fail will fail very quickly, and it is merely a case of your body being very sensitive to any kind of foreign body. Generally, though, this does not happen. Other reasons it can fail is if it is not adequately taken care of after surgery. Autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and osteoporosis can be factors in a dental implant failing. The ten-year survival rate of implants, however, is over 95%. Almost all implants succeed, and they are considered permanent options.

Benefits of Dental Implants Over Dentures and Bridges

Dental implants look and act like your own teeth. They are made to match your mouth, and if you were to run your tongue over your teeth, they feel like your own teeth. They do not need any kind of special care, you care for them the exact same way you take care of your oral health generally, and they do not cause any type of speech or eating difficulties. One significant thing that dental implants do is protect your jawbone. When you lose a tooth, what happens is that your jawbone will begin to deteriorate. Putting an implant into your jaw will help keep your jawbone from deteriorating further and can save your health down the line.

The other great thing about dental implants is that they are permanent. A metal post is inserted into the jaw, which becomes a permanent, fixed base for the replacement teeth that are capped on top. Even when implants do need replacing it is often after 25 years. Compared to alternatives to dental implants, which last around five to 15 years, this is a much better long-term solution.

The Procedure

Dental implants can be painful when they are installed, but the process is done under anesthesia and pain medication is always prescribed for the healing period. It can be uncomfortable for a short period, but a short period of discomfort is worth it to have teeth that look and function just as your real teeth do.
